The "Treasure Hunt": Can Your Family Find Your Documents?
We often talk about creating documents, but for the New Year, let's talk about finding them.
If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know where to look? We have seen too many cases where a comprehensive estate plan was created, but because no one could find the original Will or Trust, the family was still forced into a messy court process.
Your January Challenge: This month, take 15 minutes to verify the location of your critical items.
The Originals: Ensure your original Will and Trust are in a fireproof container.
The Key: If they are in a locked box or safe deposit box, does your executor know where the key is?
Digital Assets: Make a list of passwords for your email, social media, and online banking.
The "In Case of Emergency" List: Write down the contact info for your attorney, CPA, and financial advisor and stick it on the fridge or in your top drawer.
If you can't find your originals, please call us immediately at (503) 235-5150. A lost original often counts as "revoked" in the eyes of the court. We can create new documents for you.
