Healthy Aging Month: Small Habits That May Help Keep Your Mind Sharp

September is Healthy Aging Month, which makes this the perfect time to share some encouraging news. Research suggests that everyday habits may help support brain health as we age. While no routine can guarantee protection against memory loss, small choices add up over the years, and most of the choices are pleasant ones.

Keep Moving. Regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain. A brisk daily walk counts, and so does gardening, dancing, or an exercise class at the community center.

Stay Connected. Social time is more than fun. Regular conversation and connection with friends and family may help keep the mind engaged. Consider that standing coffee date an investment in your health.

Tip:

Make a fall tradition of reviewing your estate plan each September. A quick look at your documents, beneficiaries, and named decisionmakers helps ensure your plan still matches your life.

Challenge Your Brain. Puzzles, reading, learning a new skill, or picking up an old hobby all give the brain a healthy workout. Novelty matters, so trying something unfamiliar can be especially valuable.

Guard Your Sleep. The brain does essential housekeeping overnight. Aim for consistent bedtimes, limit caffeine late in the day, and talk with your doctor if snoring or restless nights are common.

Tend to the Basics. Managing blood pressure, blood sugar, and hearing health all appear to play a role in long-term cognitive wellness. Those routine checkups matter more than most people realize.

Healthy aging is not about perfection. Picking one or two of these habits and enjoying them consistently is a wonderful place to start this fall. Your future self, and the people who love you, may thank you for it.
